How to talk about a change in communication without starting a fight
Noticing a shift is one thing. Bringing it up without making the other person defensive is the harder part. A calmer conversation starts with describing your experience, not proving a case.
Choose a moment with room to talk
Avoid opening a sensitive topic in the middle of a rushed text exchange. If possible, ask for a time when both of you can give it attention.
Use observation, feeling, and request
Start with what you noticed: “We've had fewer real catch-ups this week.” Add your experience: “I've missed feeling close to you.” Then make a small request: “Could we make time to talk properly tonight?”
This is easier to hear than broad statements like “You never care” or “Everything has changed.”
Stay curious about the answer
You may learn there is stress, exhaustion, or something you did not know about. Listening does not erase your feeling; it gives both of you better information about what to do next.
